DAVID CITY -- Bad back and all, David City Aquinas’ Mary Klosterman still delivered.

The sophomore appeared to be in full strength as she grabbed two firsts and two seconds in helping the Monarchs with 112 points to a runner-up finish in the C-4 district meet in David City.

The North Bend girls took the team title with 140 points. David City finished fourth with 56 points, followed by Twin River and Cross County with 45 and 41.5 points, respectively. High Plains and Fullerton rounded up the area teams with eighth and ninth-place finishes with 17.5 and six points.

On the boys, High Plains was second with 80 points, finishing behind district champion East Butler. Aquinas was fourth with 70.5 points, while Cross County was fifth with 68 points. Fullerton and David City took sixth and seventh for 53.5 and 48.5, respectively. Twin River scored 10 points with a ninth-place finish.

Klosterman swept the hurdle races as she took the 100-meter hurdles in 15.8 seconds and the 300 hurdles at 47.6. Finishing behind her was teammate Megan Engel in both races. Klosterman also finished second in the 400 at 1:00.5 and was a member of the 1,600 relay team that took second.

Klosterman, who didn’t run in any of the finals during the Centennial Conference races because of back spasms, said her back was doing fine.

“I was a little nervous when I was warming up for the hurdles,” Klosterman said. “After the first race of the prelims was over, I just felt a lot better and I was really motivated after that.”

Aquinas girls coach John Svec said with it being the district meet, nothing was going to stop the defending Class C 100 hurdles state champion from running in the race.

“She’s a tough competitor,” Svec said. “She just came back and ran well. Her back looked fine but I’ll never know because she will never tell me.”

Engel ran a 16.5 in the 100 hurdles and a 48.5 in the 300 hurdles to qualify for the state meet. Also earning berths were Jill Stara in the 1,600 with a 6:02 time, while Amy Kreikemeier went 15 feet, 10.5 inches for a second-place finish in the long jump, and Cortny Novacek qualified on the automatic qualifying height in the high jump, clearing 5-1 for fourth place.

“We were banged up a little bit but we had some girls come through for us today,” Svec said. “The ones in the field events gave us enough points to get a runner-up trophy. We had a lot of girls run personal bests today and that helped us out today.”

The David City girls will bring girls in four events. A big win came in the 400 relay with the team of Gentry Dodson, Hannah Behrens, Morgan Otte and Rebecca Buntgen won with a 51.4. The team missed out on a state spot last season. Also grabbing a district championship was Elizabeth Eberle, who won the 3,200 at 12:39.4. Buntgen earned a pair of second-place finishes in the 100 and the 200, coming in with times of 12.9 and 27.2, respectively.

The Twin River qualified in two events. Cortney Czapla paced the Titans with a win in the high jump, clearing 5-1. Kayla Mohr took second in the triple jump with a leap of 34-7.

The High Plains and Cross County girls will each send one to the state meet. For High Plains, Melissa Sundberg claimed the 1,600 with a 5:49.8 as she got out to a big lead after the first lap and never relinquished it. For Cross County, Ashley Westring finished second in the 3,200 at 12:42.6.

Brandi Voichahoske was the highest finisher for Fullerton in finishing fourth in the 1,600.

On the boys side, High Plains won two events and grabbed runner-up spots in three events to help grab the district runner-up trophy. Marcus Bender took the discus with a toss of 143-8, while Derek Rodine won the shot put with a 50-5 throw. Bender also earned a runner-up finish in the 110 hurdles, running a 15.7, while Robert Klingsporn earned a pair of silver medals in the 100 and 200 in 11.3 and 23.6, respectively. The Storm, overall, brought home 14 medals, which was pleasing for High Plains boys coach Steve Meyer.

“Marcus winning the discus and Derek winning the shot put was great for us,” Meyer said. “Robert is only a junior, but qualified in the 100 and 200 and that kid just loves to compete for us. I thought our seniors have led us all year and I’m just proud of the way they performed for us. Finishing second is a great reward for them.”

The Aquinas boys grabbed three wins in the pole vault, the 400 and the 1,600 relay. Justin Fiala claimed the pole vault, clearing 13-0, Paul McCawley took the 400 at 52.8, while the two were part of the 1,600 relay with Matt Mimick and Elliot Rech, running in 3:32.4. Mimick also earned a berth in the 300 hurdles with a 41.0.

Daniel Meradith and Heath Leitz led the Cross County boys with wins in the 800 and 3,200, respectively. Meradith crossed the tape in the 800 at 2:04.7, while Leitz took the 3,200 at 10:44. Both kids are part of the 3,200-relay team that got added as an additional qualifying with a 8:37.3. The team of Justin Hackensack, Meradith, Leitz and Daniel Relihan got beat at the end by Fullerton by a tenth of a second. Isaac Moore will join them at the state meet as he finished second with a leap of 42-5.25 in the triple jump.

Other than Fullerton’s 3,200 relay team of Brad Wetovick, Jeremiah Wetovick, Ryan Larsen and Tom Malander, Brad Wetovick earned another spot at state. He finished second in the 1,600 at 4:52.8. Matt Voichahoske qualified with a 6-1 second-place finish in the high jump. The 1,600 relay team of Jeremiah Wetovick, Voichahoske, Larsen and Andrew Shotkoski snuck in as an additional qualifier with a 3:34.3.

Keaton Prochaska was the lone David City athlete that qualified for the state meet, finishing second in the long jump with a leap of 20-9.

Logan Morris was the highest finisher for the Twin River boys as he finished third in the 3,200.
