OSCEOLA -- It was a clean sweep for the Humphrey St. Francis boys and girls track and field teams.
Both Flyer teams came away with the D-4 district titles Wednesday in Osceola.
The St. Francis girls, paced by Kim Foltz and Susan Rollman’s three firsts and a second, qualified in 11 events for the state track meet as they scored 153 points, 68 points better than runner-up Osceola. The boys, meanwhile, will participate in seven events, scoring 122 points, 21.5 points better than Lindsay Holy Family.
“It was a fun day for us,” St. Francis track coach Dean Korus said. “The girls have won every meet they went to this year and hopefully they can get one more. As for the boys, this is the biggest senior class we have had in a while and the district championship is a tribute to them.”
The Holy Family girls finished third with 79 points, while Humphrey took fifth with 63 points. Newman Grove placed sixth with 34 points, followed by St. Edward with 17 points. Shelby and Leigh both scored 10 points to finished tied for eighth, while Rising City scored three points to take 10th.
On the boys side, Osceola just missed second-place as it scored 99 points, followed by Newman Grove with 57.5 points,
Foltz took the 100-meter run with a 12.5-second time, edging twin-sister Kelsi by three-tenths of a second. Kelsi did get some revenge in winning the 200 at 26.5, a tenth of a second faster than Kim. The sisters were part of the winning 100 relay team with Steph Baumgart and Jenni Wemhoff with a winning time of 51.1. Kim was a member of the 1,600-relay team with Wemhoff, Rollman and Baumgart, that won the event in 4:08.9.
Kim said it’s been fun competing with her sister, as well as coming away with three firsts on the day.
“Kelsi and I have really pushed each other along during the course of the season and it’s good to see both of us being very successful,” Kim said. “As for getting three firsts, I’m so excited to have this opportunity. I’m willing to work hard to get where I want to go.”
Korus said it’s been nice having the two sisters during the course of their careers.
“They have come on strong during the course of the season,” Korus said. “That’s nice to see because they have been running behind Kelli Wemhoff at the start of their careers and now it has been their time to shine. I think they have done that.”
Rollman took first in the 100 hurdles at 15.9 and in the 400 at 1:00.7, while taking second in the 300 hurdles at 47.9. Other state qualifiers include Jenna Bender, who threw 91 feet, 6 inches to finish second in the discus, and Jenni Wemhoff in the 400 at 1:01.7.
In all, the Flyers brought home 24 medals, which pleased Korus.
“We got the points where we thought we would get them, but we had some surprises as well,” Korus said. “Everyone had a lot of personal bests today and that is all you can ask for in a district meet.”
The St. Francis boys came away with three district champions. Mitchell Wieser nipped Lindsay Holy Family’s Lucas Weeder in the 1,600 as he passed him just before crossing the finish line in 4:46.7. Steve Wemhoff leaped 20-4 to win the long jump, while the 1,600-relay team of Cole Classen, Miles Korus, Kendal Bender and Matt Korus ran a personal-best 3:35.7 to win the event.
“Those events had good days for us as well,” Korus said. “I thought what got us going in the 1,600 relay was Miles Korus, who I think had his best meet of the season. He really got us going in the event as he brought his time down.”
Wemhoff also earned a berth in the triple jump in taking second with a 39-4.75 leap, while Bender earned a pair of seconds in the 200 and 400 with times of 23.4 and 52.1, respectively. Also qualifying for the state meet was Joe Keeler, who finished second in the 110 hurdles at 15.9.
Korus said the boys should do fine at the state meet as they will go into the meet with a lot of confidence.
“Right now with all that we are taking down there, it looks fine,” Korus said.
For other teams, the Osceola girls qualified in six events. Jaimie Branting won the discus with a toss of 93-10, while taking second in the shot put with a 32-0 toss. Morgan Walgren won the 1,600 with a 5:47.8. Also earning berths to the state meet include Jordyn Kuhnel (pole vault, 8-10), Sarah Carnes (high jump, 4-11) and Kelsey Erhart (800, 2:29.1) in getting second-place finishes.
The Holy Family girls will take four events down to the state meet. The 3,200 relay team won the event with a 10:05.2 time, while Natalie Korus took the 800 at 2:28.1. Other qualifiers include Lacey McPhillips (3,200, 13:20.3) and Torie Wiese (long jump, 15-10.5) as they both finished second in their events.
Paige Frauendorfer won both the long jump and the triple jump to lead the Humphrey girls. Frauendorfer had jumps of 16-10 and 35-1.75 in the two events, respectively. Leann Osten also earned a berth to the state meet with a silver medal in the 1,600 (6:03.9). The 400 relay team got in as an additional qualifier in finishing second at 52.2.

Lindsay Coffin was the highest-place finisher for the Shelby girls in finishing fourth in the long jump at 15-7.
Angela Brahn led the Leigh girls with a 28-8 throw in the shot put to medal fourth.

Holy Family earned state berths in six events, with most of them coming in the distance races. The 3,200 relay team of Weeder, Alex Schumacher, Grant Wiese and Andrew Kurtenbach won the event at 8:29.8. The Bulldogs went 1-2 in the 800 with Kurtenbach winning at 2:06.3, and Schumacher finishing right behind him at 2:07.6. Calvin Klassen won the high jump, clearing 5-7. Kevin Weeder eased his way to a victory in the 3,200, winning at 10:18.2.
Landon Hayes led the Osceola boys with two firsts and two seconds. The junior won the 110 hurdles at 15.6, while finishing second behind teammate Anthony Hanson in the 300 hurdles. Hanson won the event in 41.1, while Hayes was right behind him at 41.9. Both were members of the winning 400 relay team with Brady Erhart and Kyler LeSuer that beat St. Francis by a hundredth of a second at 45.10.
Seth Peterson and Tony Cliffords also earned berths in the pole vault and 3,200 run, respectively. Peterson took the pole vault by clearing 11-6, while Cliffords finished second at 10:28.7.
Kirk Vodicka led Shelby with a pair of first-places finishes. He threw 131-10 to claim the discus, while throwing a 44-3.5 to win the shot put. Derek Swanson also grabbed a win for the Huskies as he jumped 40-2.75 to win the triple jump.
Sean Farrier qualified in the discus and the shot put to lead the Newman Grove boys. He threw a 131-10 in the discus and a 41.9.5 in the shot put for a pair of second-place finishes.
Dylan Went was the lone state qualifier for the Leigh boys as he went 19-4.5 to take second in the long jump.
Dalton Tift earned the only state berth for the Humphrey boys as he was second in the high jump, clearing 5-7.
