COLUMBUS -- The PrairieLand Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) Council will co-sponsor used tire collections with several communities across the area this summer. Funding for the collection of 550 tons of used tires will be made available in 2008 for citizens throughout the PrairieLand area.
All of the 2008 used tire recycling grant applications have been approved by the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality and funding for the projects will be provided by the department’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Incentive Grants Program.
The collection sites and dates include Albion, May 12-13; Fullerton, May 17; Platte Center, July 10, 11; and Clarkson, July 18.
A fall follow-up collections is tentatively planned for Petersburg if funds remain available.
Used rims will also be accepted at each site. Tires will be removed for recycling; rims will be sold as scrap metal.
Funding for the recycling projects is provided by the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Incentive Grants Program. The funds will be administered by the Lower Elkhorn, Lower Loup and Lower Platte North Natural Resources Districts. The used tires will be hauled away for recycling into marketable products by Champlin Tire Recycling Inc.
