COLUMBUS -- The night was sure to be sweet for Columbus High School prom attendants.
It could have had something to do with the 100 pounds of chocolate situated at the bottom of a slide that tempted anyone with a sweet tooth to stop by and snag a morsel.
Or it could have been the taffy and other pieces of candy laid out on the tables and hanging from balloons in the hallways.
Maybe it was just the night itself and the dance that awaited those who went to the Saturday event held at the school.
Whatever it was, students were ready to dance the night away at the prom which was set to the theme of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
The juniors came up with the theme after several rounds of brainstorming, said Brian Cleary, a junior class officer.
“We wanted something that a lot of schools hadn’t done,” he said.
If unique was what they were going for, that is what they got.
The set up looked as original as the sets did in the movie. There was a bubble making machine that students passed through on the way to the gym, balloons sprawled out on the floor and of course candy everywhere you looked.
The movie also was being played on a big screen, and the deejay’s platform was decorated with the words “Golden Ticket,” which fans of the show know earned the lucky person a trip to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.
Cleary, who was with his date, Gabby Goc, said the candy was specially ordered, and he hoped it would add a bit more fun to the evening.
Junior Zach Lindsley said planning for the prom started at least a month-and-a-half ago. He said he was happy with the way things turned out.
The after-hours party being held at Platte County Agricultural Park also was going to be a highlight of the evening for Lindsley and his date, Kassie Thompson.
“Post prom will be a lot of fun. We get to play some games and eat a lot of food,” Lindsley said.
That is, if he hadn’t already had his fill of candy.
