Prom sweet for CHS students

COLUMBUS -- The night was sure to be sweet for Columbus High School prom attendants.

It could have had something to do with the 100 pounds of chocolate situated at the bottom of a slide that tempted anyone with a sweet tooth to stop by and snag a morsel.

Or it could have been the taffy and other pieces of candy laid out on the tables and hanging from balloons in the hallways.

Maybe it was just the night itself and the dance that awaited those who went to the Saturday event held at the school.

Whatever it was, students were ready to dance the night away at the prom which was set to the theme of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

The juniors came up with the theme after several rounds of brainstorming, said Brian Cleary, a junior class officer.

“We wanted something that a lot of schools hadn’t done,” he said.

If unique was what they were going for, that is what they got.

The set up looked as original as the sets did in the movie. There was a bubble making machine that students passed through on the way to the gym, balloons sprawled out on the floor and of course candy everywhere you looked.

The movie also was being played on a big screen, and the deejay’s platform was decorated with the words “Golden Ticket,” which fans of the show know earned the lucky person a trip to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.

Cleary, who was with his date, Gabby Goc, said the candy was specially ordered, and he hoped it would add a bit more fun to the evening.

Junior Zach Lindsley said planning for the prom started at least a month-and-a-half ago. He said he was happy with the way things turned out.

The after-hours party being held at Platte County Agricultural Park also was going to be a highlight of the evening for Lindsley and his date, Kassie Thompson.

“Post prom will be a lot of fun. We get to play some games and eat a lot of food,” Lindsley said.

That is, if he hadn’t already had his fill of candy.

Etiquette Lessons?

I noticed this with the Lakeview video too--WHY do NONE of these girls know how to walk like young ladies in formal gowns? They all walk like truck drivers in dresses! There is nothing demure or polished about any of them, despite wearing what is probably the most expensive dress they'll wear until they get married! The whole thing looks silly when they come tromping down the hallway insteady of carrying themselves like dignified young women. When did people stop teaching their girls how to act like ladies? My four year old knows how to walk in a dress better than some of these girls!

get a life. are you joking? if you have time to talk about how some girls are walking in their prom dresses you should think about finding a hobby or spend more with your kid.

Etiquette Lessons?--What you said is exactly what I was thinking when I watched the videos yesterday. Do these girls ride horses all day? Please take some self-improvement classes before you graduate and venture out into the world.
sick of the negativity!!

Ok, let me get this straight... several women who are appropriately dressed, SOBER, and at a school event bother you because they don't walk well in heels? We live in a flip flop world!! You are either highly sheltered or VERY OLD. Let's be proud that they are good kids having fun!!

What crybabies! If you're a female and walk like a truck driver, you should be happy if someone brings this to your attention, just in case you want to look feminine. If not, so be it. I don't know any of the people in the videos and could care less who they are. I'm definitely not old or sheltered (whatever that has to do with anything). Grow up.

You live a sad life if you have nothing to do but sit around and critique girls at a high school dance. Get a life and find something better to do. I honestly see nothing wrong with the way these girls are walking; maybe the five girls they showed in this video have leg troubles or are wearing high heels! You need to realize that times change and stop complaining about it.

News Flash!!! If you can't walk in heels, don't wear them. Hey Josh--Times change? You mean long long ago it was ok to be feminine, but now girls want to walk masculine? Last time I looked I was allowed an opinion. The girls all dressed nice, but some of them need walking lessons. My life (which is none of your business) is far from sad. I can also walk and dance in four inch heels. How about you?

What does it matter to you? I guarantee you every one of these girls is better looking than you no matter how "lady-like" you think you walk. Prom isn't about walking like a "lady" for 10 seconds on a video for a middle aged lady to look at. It's about having fun. You were not there so stop acting like you know anything.

I think you all need to get a life. I am a student at CHS. I viewed the video in class and I read every comment out loud to my fellow classmates. I believe that it is sad that high school students said that you need to grow up. By the way we are not in a pageant. We can walk like truckers if we want to.

Awww, isn't that nice, all the high school girls who want to walk like truckers are speaking their minds. And their friends are diving in, too. Isn't that sweet?

I'm so far from "old" you wouldn't believe it. I'm much closer to being prom age than what anyone would consider "old". Doesn't change the fact that some girls seem to have no desire to walk like ladies.

For the record, my life is ANYTHING but sad, I spend TONS of time with my kid (who really does know how to act in a dress), I have several hobbies, am not sheltered in the least, and yes, I know how to walk in heels, even in a dress.

Can they walk like truckers if they want to? Sure, it's a free country. And because it's a free country, I can say FACTUALLY that they look awful doing it. Didn't comment on their family, or what kind of lives they led or whether they needed hobbies... just said they looked less-than-feminine because they were uninformed about the appropriate way to carry one's self in a formal gown.

LOL about Josh - times change...so girls are aspiring to walk like linebackers now? Yeah, I missed that, and frankly, your statements are ridiculous. Class is timeless, dignity and carrying oneself with pride are timeless, and the fact that you don't get that just shows your immaturity, but that's OK. You'll probably grow out of it.

And I'm sure they were wearing heels - that was part of my point. They weren't taught how to walk in heels, or in formal wear in general. Has nothing to do with what generation you're a part of.

Further, you have NO idea how good-looking I am. And bet your money that if we stood together in the real world in formal gowns and walked together, the one walking like they had "leg problems" would NOT be classified as "prettier".

And I don't NEED to have been there, see - there was a video!

It's a matter of how you carry yourself as a woman (or as a man, for that matter, but that's another story) - and that's something that matters in the real world, whether you like it or not.

Wow you get defensive when you realize you are wrong. How does it feel knowing that everyone thinks you are a complete joke? Not one person agrees with you. You are not in high school so don’t worry about prom. How does the ability to walk in heels help you in life? It will land you in Columbus, Nebraska with nothing better to do than comment on videos of high school proms. I for one am more concerned with receiving a good education than learning how to walk in heels. I’m sure 99.9% of the world's population would agree. But there are a few people in this world whose top priority in life is acting lady like and walking around their house on a Saturday night in heels with no one who cares about them but their child. I would like to thank you for sharing your ridiculous opinion and giving me and everyone who has seen this something to laugh about. You don’t have to tell me your sorry because I already accept your apology.
