COLUMBUS -- The Scotus Central Catholic boys golf team’s season will start later than expected.

The Shamrocks were scheduled to start with a dual with Lakeview Thursday. However, the weather caused a delay as the dual will now be at 4:15 p.m. Monday at the Elks Country Club.

SCC coach Sean Wickham said the golfers were disappointed not to play, because they can’t simulate the competition.

“They were looking forward to seeing some competition,” Wickham said. “I was disappointed as well, because we have some first-time freshman and sophomores playing. But the weather is something we have no control over. Hopefully, we’ll get to play Monday.”

As for the season, the Shamrocks return two golfers from last year’s state qualifying team that finished ninth. Those players include Mitch Bierbower and Tony Zakrzewski. Wickham said he feels those players are hungry to get back to state.

“With them being seniors, I think their goal is to get back and play better than they did last year,” Wickham said. “They might want to improve on their scores from last year throughout the season and hopefully we can take a team down to the state golf meet again.”

Scotus did lose two-time state qualifier Nick Daley, who transferred to Grand Island Central Catholic. But other players looking to make the varsity team include Brady Vancura, Derek Dierman and Adam Niedbalski. Wickham said he feels those players have the potential of doing good things once the season gets underway.

“Losing Nick definitely hurts because that would give us another solid scorer, but I think we have some people who can step up,” Wickham said. “Maybe not play as well as Nick, but some potential that we have coming in and playing well for us. Brady and Nick are two players that are capable of filling in those shoes that were left by Nick. Adam also has the potential of shooting some low scores for us.”

Scotus has had to deal with weather concerns, not just Thursday, but the entire golf season as well, which hasn’t been consistent. There have been some good days and bad days. Other than that, Wickham said the season will be OK once the golfers get some rounds in.

“We’re kind of in the same situation we were in a year ago,” Wickham said. “We don’t have the great golfer or anyone shooting 33 or 34, but I think we are all capable of shooting in the low 80s for our complete 18 holes. We are going to have people shoot between 82-85 and the rest from anywhere between 88 and 95. If you can do that as a team, you are going to be pretty successful. We have had some pretty good practices going into today’s dual. It’s a shame we didn’t get a chance to compete today.”

With the Lakeview dual being rescheduled for Monday, the Shamrocks will have a busy week ahead of them. They travel to Humphrey St. Francis Tuesday, then to the Lincoln Pius X Invite Thursday.
