Scotus girls takes third in relays By Marc Zavala mzavala@columbustelegram.comCOLUMBUS -- Athletes who competed in the Scotus Central Catholic Relays Tuesday got a taste of nice weather. On a day where the sun was shining with a little breeze, the Shamrocks girls finished third with 77 points, while the boys had two champions to take fourth with 69 points. “It was great weather today and a fun way for the kids to compete and start the outdoor season,” Scotus boys coach Jeff Ohnoutka said. The David City Aquinas girls came in fourth with 59 points, while the boys were fifth with 56 points. Waverly took the boys title with 96 points, while Wahoo Neumann took the girls title with 109 points. The long jump core of Austin Wallick, Pat McKay, Dillon Clarey and Jordan Janda combined to leap 55 feet, 1.2 inch to win the event for Scotus. Also picking up first place was the discus team of Arturo Spindola, Ben Lundquist, Josh Ryba and Taylor Suess, who combined to throw 390-11. Ohnoutka said Janda was the one that helped the Shamrocks grab the win in the long jump. The junior jumped 19-8. He said he also liked what he saw out of the discus team. “Those two teams did a great job today,” Ohnoutka said. “We had a couple of people that it was the first time they ever competed in the long jump, and that’s what happens in a relay event. Jordan jumped really well in the meet. I’m happy with our throwers, they are going out and do a great job every time they go out and compete.” The Shamrocks had three second-place finishes. The shot put team of Trace Murray, Taylor Suess, Josh Ryba and Spindola threw 127-10, while the 400 relay of McKay, Kyle Christensen, Callen Schwank and Janda ran 45.41 seconds, and Quintin Siemek, Kyle Benesch, Nick Raimondo and Craig Pekarek0 ran the 1,600 medley with a 3-minute, 54.75-second time. Also coming home with places were the distance medley (third), the pole vault (fourth), triple jump (fourth), 400 weightman relay (fourth), 800 relay (fourth), 6,400 relay (fifth), 3,200 relay (sixth), high jump (sixth), 260 hurdle shuttle (sixth), 440 hurdle shuttle (sixth) and 1,600 relay (sixth). “I thought, overall, we had a good day,” Ohnoutka said. “The kids competed hard and had good times for the first outdoor meet of the season. We got a top-four finish, but with a break here and there, we could have been top three, so I can’t really complain with how we started the season outdoors.” The Scotus girls didn’t win a single event but still brought home a ribbon in every event. The Shamrocks had three runner-up finishes on the day, coming in the long jump, the 6,400-meter relay and the 400 relay. Monica Boeding, Kara Bogus and Kelli Schumacher combined to leap 44-8 in the long jump, while Jaisa Gutierrez, Emily Jarecki, Katie Ohnoutka and Lindsay McElhose ran a 24:33.94 in the 6,400 relay, and Ashley Paprocki, Boeding, Korth and Amber Ewers ran a 51.91 in the 400 relay. Other Shamrock teams to place were pole vault (third), 1,600 relay (third), triple jump (third), 440 low hurdles (third), high jump (fourth) 1,600 medley relay (fourth), 250 low hurdles (fourth) distance medley (fourth), discus (fourth), shot put (fourth), 800 relay (fourth) and the 3,200 relay (sixth). Shamrock girls coach Janet Tooley said finishing third behind Neumann and Lincoln Pius X, which scored 96 points, in the relay meet was kind of what she expected, and she was pleased with the first meet outdoors. “We had some kids who ran in events who we didn’t even have a time trial on, so overall I was pleased with the overall effort from the girls,” Tooley said. “We performed what was expected or a little bit above. We didn’t have anybody I thought underachieved. It was a good start for us. It was a great day for us, and we can’t complain about the weather we received today.” The Aquinas pole vault team of Justin Fiala, Doug Daro, Clete DeWispelare and Ben Wessling won the event by combining to clear 34-6. The 1,600 relay team (Paul McCawley, Elliot Rech, Justin Fiala and Matt Mimick) took finished second with a 3:39.3 time. Also grabbing places for the Monarchs were the 3,200 relay (third), the 6,400 relay (third), 260 high hurdle shuttle (fourth), 440 hurdle shuttle (third), 400 relay (fourth), long jump (fifth), shot put (fifth), high jump (fifth), triple jump (fifth), 1,600 medley (sixth) and distance medley (sixth). The Aquinas girls highest finishers were second-place ribbons in the discus and the high jump. Britney Novacek, Ashley Kobza, Gabi Comte and Bre Romshek threw a 270 total in the discus, while Missy DeJong, Cortney Novacek and Katie Holoubek combined to jump 13-8 in the high jump.
