Schuyler teams top Lakeview Tuesday

COLUMBUS -- Schuyler came to Columbus and took both games from Lakeview Tuesday afternoon at Wilderness Park.

The Class B, No. 5 Warrior boys scored early in each half to grab a 2-0 victory over the Vikings.

In the girls game, Schuyler also pitched a shutout, racking up a 3-0 win with all of the Warrior goals coming in the second half with the wind.

The Viqueens hung right with Schuyler throughout the first half, getting off several shot attempts of their own that just wouldn’t go in.

The Warriors also were able to fight off the wind to take the ball upfield against Lakeview, but couldn’t overcome a tough defensive effort from the girls in blue and white.

“We passed the ball a lot better and went to the ball a lot harder,” Lakeview head coach Crystal Lee said. “It was a rough game -- a lot of pushing and not many calls.”

Things opened up a bit for Schuyler following the halftime break, however, as Felicia Glodowski hit a shot in the 51st minute. This was followed by a goal from Amanda Brabec, who took a pass from Katey Wennekamp in the middle of a scrum and put it in the net around the other players.

Wennekamp finished the trio of scores by knocking in a ball passed to her from Glodowski.

“I was happy with how we played, although we seemed timid in the first half,” Schuyler head coach Mary Racicky said. “Most of that was just miscommunication, much of which was caused by not being able to hear above the wind.”

Racicky did think that her squad could have performed better, however, especially on the set play, such as corner kicks.

“We had nine corner kicks, and we should have executed more of them,” she said. “Their goalie did a good job to her credit, especially for being a new goalie.”

On the Viqueens side, Lee was happy to see how her offense played to start off the game, even though they weren’t able to knock in a goal.

“We’re really inexperienced up front this year,” Lee said. “They got a little too excited after they got the ball in position and would miss the shot. We just couldn’t finish.”

The Viking boys didn’t have any more success with scoring in their own shutout loss to Schuyler.

Lakeview did get the ball down deep into Warrior territory, but couldn’t capitalize on a few good looks. Viking head coach P.J. Miller said his team performed fairly well, but appeared a little worn down.

“Overall, I’d say we played OK,” Miller said. “It was physical, and there were a few calls missed both ways. We had our chances, but I think we ran out of gas a little bit.”

The Warriors also had some trouble finishing, but did manage to score goals in the first 10 minutes of each half. Enrique Torres was able to get wide open after a Schuyler corner kick and buried a pass from Angel Gonzalez into the net in the seventh minute of the contest.

The rest of the first half was scoreless, but the Warriors came out strong following the break. Jim Belina was able to adjust on a pass from Andrew Muhle and skirted around the defense for the score in the 49th minute.

The teams went back and forth after that, with neither team getting too many good opportunities.

Schuyler head coach Fred Doscher was glad to pick up the win, but said he didn’t see the complete effort he was looking for from his team.

“We’re still not playing our best,” Doscher said. “At times we looked good, but other times we were a little slow.”

Lakeview took eight shots on the day to Schuyler’s 10, and Warrior goalie Josh Papa made eight saves. It was Papa’s third shutout of the year.

“I thought Lakeview did a pretty good job against us today,” Doscher said. “They had some runs at the beginning.”

The Schuyler boys will play Seward at home Thursday, while the girls host Holdrege Saturday for their next game.

Both Lakeview teams will be facing Platteview Friday, but the girls will be at home, while the boys will be playing on the Trojans’ home field.
