COLUMBUS -- An interim plan to relocate Sunrise Elementary School students and relieve overcrowding at Shell Creek Elementary School was approved by the Lakeview Community Schools Board of Education during a special meeting Tuesday night.

The temporary plan, which would be enacted for the 2009-2010 school year, would cost about $2.2 million and move seventh- and eighth-grade students to Lakeview High School and relocate the Sunrise students to Shell Creek and Platte Center Elementary schools.

Superintendent Paul Calvert said the district would look at sending Sunrise students who reside at Country View mobile home park on U.S. Highway 30 to Platte Center and the remaining students to Shell Creek. He said 76-77 percent of the Sunrise students live in Country View. The district would have to pay mileage or offer busing to transport students to Platte Center and the high school. The decision will be determined by the board at a later date.

With this plan, the two portable classrooms currently being utilized at Sunrise and another purchased by the district would be relocated to the other elementary sites -- two at Platte Center and one at Shell Creek. The cost for purchasing a used portable, moving all three portables and hooking them up at the respective site is estimated between $160,000 and $200,000.

A significant portion of the $2.2 million would be for a permanent addition to the high school, which the board voted unanimously to support. The board approved construction of four science classrooms and two standard classrooms to add on to the high school at an estimated cost of $1.5 million for the equipped science rooms and $340,000 for the two other classrooms.

The remaining costs included installation of a sprinkler system and additional repairs at a cost of $200,000 to the district.

When four additional rooms were proposed beyond the science room addition, Keith Runge, board member, said he wanted to hold the line on spending, especially because this is a temporary solution.

In the near future, the district will ask the patrons to pass a bond to fund a permanent solution, Runge said, and if the board spends more than is necessary, voters may be inclined to oppose any proposition presented before them.

The board plans to utilize $1.5 million to fund part of the project and will hold another special meeting at 8 p.m. April 3 to discuss with a financial adviser the best method for financing the project.

Bob Arp, Lakeview High School principal, said staff would make this plan work and try to isolate the seventh- and eighth-grade students from the high school body as much as possible, based on the concerns expressed by a number of patrons.

Larry Mohrman, board member, said although this may not be the best situation for the students, at the present time it seems like the best plan available for a temporary solution under current circumstances.

“This looks like it is a doable solution ... not a long-term solution, but a workable one and we need to move forward,” Mohrman said.

Finally a decision that at least addresses the problem that the school district is facing. Now if a concensus can be reached to fix the problem on a more permanate bases maybe the focus can return to the children and making the district as good as it could be.

Why is so much money being spent and so much emphasis being put on a "temporary" solution. Instead of spending $$$ on moving and purchasing portables, it just seems like it would make a lot more sense to invest in permanent stuctures, whether that be additions to present elementaries or a new structure. This just smells of money going down the drain to me. But, decisions have been made and that is a GOOD thing. We move forward from here!

Well is this progrss or is it a fools plan? There goes our hard earned money on a tempoary plan? Seems to me common sense went to the way side in this one.Way to school board drop the ball again.
what do you want?

Come on people, what do you want? You have had the chance to approve 2 bond issue to take care of this issue, and now you have the audacity to call this a fools plan. It seems to me that now the high school will get the much needed classroom space to improve the science dept, Platte Center will get the boost in student placement so you can quit worrying that "your" school is going to be closed down, and hopefully the 8 grade students will receive the opportunity to get some advanced science and math classes. It's about time that the school board stepped up to the plate and did something instead of waiting for h@&# to freeze over and get the patrons to finally approve something. Also if you read the article, they aren't just spending on portables, but actually on brick and motar structures at the high school.

Thank God!!! Finally, after 2 failed bond issues, the board stepped up! Maybe we'll see some true progress in education made for the students now. It's time we stopped living up to the "cowpie high" mentality.

I would be more in favor of listening to your complaint "concerned platte center tax payer" if instead of just be ing concerned about Platte Center, you were equally concerned about the entire Lakeview district. I for one applaud the school board for finally agreeing that the district-- AS A WHOLE-- needed to make some forward momentum. It sounds to me that instead of just a temporary plan, this takes the first steps in providing much needed space at the high school, and preparing our district for the future, instead of staying in the past and sticking with the status quo.
Is there a better plan?

I agree the 7th and 8th graders need more and advanced classes. But is having kids travel 20 miles going to create more problems then it will solve? Would a better idea have been to move the other kids in the district be a wiser plan, you know change the boundry lines? That way people dont have to travel so far in bad weather? If bus service isnt offered, put your self in those folks place haveing to get up earlier to travel to take the kids to school then turning around and driving back to columbus to work. And as far as the cowpie high mentality goes, for those who use the term or still think we have it least i remind you of our schools outstanding fbla program and our science program not to mention our fine sports programs. In my opinion I think there is better plan out there.

There is a better plan but the patrons keep voting it down. A centralized K-6 building would allow for a streamlined k-6 curriculum. Right now, each elementary site is doing its own thing. Some of the eighth grade teachers even insist they have taught Algebra I to the students when they haven't. Then you put the 7-8 at the high school (thank you school board) to create an environment where they can be treated like young adults instead elementary children. They can have more class choices, keyboarding can begin at these grades allowing the high school to offer more computer classes. The 7 and 8 teachers can be specialized thus ensuring the teacher is actually endorsed to teach Algebra, science, social studies, etc...This will all result in better prepared students as they enter high school. Right now the Freshman as not as independent as they should be. You want a better education for your kids then be ready for change!! Change will take time, energy, some pain and yes money. Lakeview is a good school system - let's now work towards making it great!! It is far past the time to stand together and make this system as progressive as it once was. Do what is right for the kids. Can you honestly put a value on the education these kids need in order to find success in the 21st century?
