Offense stagnant in Viqueen loss By Marc Zavala mzavala@columbustelegram.comCOLUMBUS -- A slow start spelled trouble for the Lakeview girls soccer team. Holdrege put in three goals in the first half on the Viqueens and never looked back to hand Lakeview a 6-0 loss Monday at Wilderness Park. “We just didn’t play well in the first and even the first part of the second half,” Lakeview coach Crystal Lee said. “We came out flat, our defense wasn’t ready. We stabbed at the ball a lot and didn’t make good passes. I’m not sure if not having school or the Easter holiday or what. It just wasn’t a good day for us.” The Dusters outshot the Viqueens 18-6, while Lakeview goalkeepers Marie Goering and Katie Bunkers combined for nine saves. The best chance Lakeview had in the first half was when Miranda Gonka broke loose on the right side for an one-on-one opportunity, but her shot missed high. Holdrege connected on two goals from Jordan Pfeifer and one from Lauren Hoeft. The Dusters had a chance for another one right before the break, but Goering dove to stop the shot. After Erin Sturgis made it 4-0, Breanna Isaacson scored as she lofted a ball over Bunkers head and into the goal. Isaacson would score again later to complete the scoring. The game may have been decided, but that still didn’t stop the Viqueens from competing. They found another level in controlling most of the possessions in the final 20 minutes of the game, but still came up short of finding the back of the net. A ball was delivered as the Holdrege goalkeeper blocked it, which caused the ball to ricochet off her. But Rachael Urkoski missed the rebound shot high. “We played pretty well the last part of the game,” Lee said. “We were there. We crashed and were ready for the ball. We just couldn’t score. We passed well and shot well the last 20 minutes of the game. The rest of the game wasn’t that way for us.” The Viqueens will battle with Schuyler at 4:30 p.m. today. Lee said she hopes the Viqueens will play better against the Warriors. “We’re hoping to come out a little stronger against Schuyler (today),” Lee said. “It will be a tough battle with Schuyler. They have a nice team.” Holdrege (2-2) 3 3 -- 6 Lakeview (1-3) 0 0 -- 0 • Goals -- Holdrege: Jordan Pfeifer 2, Breanna Isaacson 2, Lauren Hoeft, Erin Sturgis; Lakeview: None. • Assists -- Holdrege: Mallarie Mondt, Issacson; Lakeview: None. • Shots on goal -- Holdrege 18, Lakeview 6. |
