Upsets are the spice of Madness

By Andy Dygert

We are a week into the best sports time of year (in my humble opinion, that is), and it’s only getting better.

Sure, March Madness isn’t going quite as well as it could. If it were going really well, all four No. 1 seeds would already have been sent to the wayside in thrilling upsets to No. 10-16 seeds. It is going alright, though, especially since Davidson topped No. 2 seed Georgetown Sunday.

I think I liked that game even better because it destroyed my bracket.

Don’t get me wrong, I love filling out brackets and checking off the games I get right in the first rounds (gloating whenever I pick an upset like San Diego over UConn ... of course, I did pick St. Mary’s and St. Joe’s as well, so maybe I didn’t do so hot).

No, the problem is that I always want to go for the Cinderella team, even to the detriment of my own bracket. Therefore, every year when my bracket gets busted, which is usually sooner than later, I breathe a sigh of relief and get ready to enjoy the tourney even more.

I had Georgetown, Butler and Pittsburgh in the Final Four on my bracket ... so I guess you could say my bracket is shot.

Now I can go whole-heartedly for teams like Davidson and Western Kentucky. Get out your glass slippers and put some spit-shine on ’em.

If you’re someone who likes the top seeds getting through so you can see the “good” games, I understand. Those are good games. But think of this: How can you get better than the games between Butler and Tennessee or Western Kentucky and Drake?

This time of year also is nice because Spring Training is winding down and opening day is Tuesday. Sure, it may be an early first MLB game across the Pacific, but don’t worry, the other teams will begin soon enough.

Speaking of baseball, Columbus High has been facing some tough challenges as of late on the ball diamond, and they’ve got another one tonight. The Discoverers face off with No. 6 Grand Island at 5 p.m. at Pawnee Park Field. It’s supposed to be a pretty nice day weather-wise, so grab the lawn chairs and catch some early hardball.

If you’re more into games of the foot, you can head over to Wilderness Park at 3 p.m. to see the Lakeview boys and girls faced off against Holdrege. The Vikings and Viqueens will be right back in action Tuesday as they face an area team in Schuyler.

Both Scotus soccer teams also will be playing at home Tuesday, as they compete against York.

The Columbus High girls tennis team has its first meet of the year Tuesday against Norfolk at home as well.

The city boys golf teams are getting under way, with Columbus High beginning its season last Thursday and Friday, and Lakeview and Scotus opening up this week. Scotus and Lakeview have a dual scheduled for Thursday.

The area schools also start up as track gets into full swing. So get ready for spring sports to commence full force ... and let the Madness of the season continue.
