City/area digeset ‘One Book’ program scheduled today COLUMBUS -- The Friends of the Columbus Public Library, in cooperation with the Platte County Historical Society, will present a special program in the museum, west building meeting room, at 2 p.m. today. This program is part of the “One Book, One Columbus” series which focuses on Tom Brokaw’s book, “The Greatest Generation Speaks.” This is a two-part program that will focus first on what families can do to preserve the wartime history of a loved one who was or is a veteran. Examples will be on display. The second part of the program will be a tour of the museum’s military displays: WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, The War on Terror, and the WWII Andrew Jackson Higgins memorial room. Some of the WWII items from these exhibits will be on display at the Columbus Public Library. Music concert set March 2 at CCC COLUMBUS -- The public is invited to attend a music concert at 3 p.m. March 2 in the Fine Arts Theater at Central Community College-Columbus. The event will feature performances by the college chorus and the Spectrum chamber choir under the direction of Dr. Jeff Curry. It will include works from Bach, Palestrina, Brahms and Copland. The concert is free, but donations are welcome. Admission fee is $5, with tickets available at the door. CCC students, faculty and staff will be admitted free of charge. GED classes available SCHUYLER -- Central Community College is offering GED classes in Schuyler for people who want to earn a Nebraska high school diploma. The classes meet from 7-9 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Schuyler Public Library and are designed to help prepare students for the five GED exams in mathematics, reading, science, social studies and writing. Mexican dinner set for today MONROE -- The United Methodist Church is having a Mexican dinner from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. today. The meal consists of tamales by Ada Sanchez, very mild beef and chicken enchiladas, salsa bar, rice, cheesecake, flan and beverages. Cost for the dinner is $6 for adults and $3.50 for children under 12. Jewelry making class scheduled COLUMBUS -- A jewelry making class will be offered from 7-8 p.m. Thursday, along with March 6 and March 13 at the Columbus Art Gallery. The class will be instructed by Jamie Badstieber. Cost is $36 for members and $40 for non-members. All supplies and tools are provided. The first two evenings students will learn jewelry making skills by creating bracelets. During the third class students will learn wire-wrapping techniques and create earrings, pendants and or charms. Auditions for play set this week COLUMBUS -- Auditions for the upcoming Platte Valley Playhouse production of “Three Bags Full” will be held at 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Teller Theater Center, 1158 35th Ave. Six men and five women ranging in age from 20-50 are needed for this production. “Three Bags Full” will be performed April 10-13 at Central Community College. CERT training set for courthouse COLUMBUS -- The Central Region Citizen Corps Council is sponsoring a free Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training course to be held in the Platte County Courthouse Community Room. The weekend course will run Feb. 29 through March 2. The CERT Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. Members of the rural community are encouraged to attend this training. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.
