COLUMBUS -- About 50 Columbus firefighters battled a fire that broke out in the engine compartment of an ambulance parked inside the Midwest Medical Transport Co. building on 33rd Avenue early this morning.
Heavy smoke was coming out of the building when firefighters arrived at the general alarm blaze reported about 5 a.m., said Pat Miller, assistant chief of the fire department.
Firefighters had to use a saw to cut through the building’s overhead door to gain access to burning ambulance, Miller said. The company’s personnel had returned from an ambulance call about 4 a.m. and had all gone home, Miller said.
The fire at 2155 33rd Ave. was reported by a passer-by.
“It took about 15 to 20 minutes to put out the fire,’’ Miller said. The building was unoccupied when the fire broke out.
Fire damage was confined to the ambulance and overhead door and smoke damage throughout the two-story building, Miller said. The Nebraska Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the blaze.
“That’s really all we know,’’ Miller said.
He said there were no injuries among the firefighters who responded this morning.
No information was available from Midwest Medical officials on whether this morning’s fire would affect operations. Owner Kim Wolfe was out of state on business and other company officials were unavailable for comment.
