Area H.C. students part of program

HASTINGS -- Several area Hastings College students are participating in several off-campus courses during the month of January, traveling to Hawaii, Yellowstone National Park, Honduras, France, Ghana, Ireland and Mexico.

This is the 42nd year this program is being offered, with students taking one in-depth course either on or off campus.

Traveling to Hawaii will be Danielle Bernt, senior, and daughter of Michael and Sandie Bernt of Columbus; Erin Haschke, senior, and daughter of Paul and Carol Haschke of Columbus. They will be studying the natural history and biodiversity of three of the Hawaiian Islands. They will have the opportunity to visit Volcanoes National Park.

Traveling to Ireland will be Jennifer Ellsworth, senior, and daughter of Robert and MaryKay Ellsworth of Bellwood. Students will be studying the history of 19th century Ireland, and applying Victorian Travelers’ experiences to modern day tourism.

Traveling to Yellowstone National Park will be Jeffrey Hartman, junior, and son of Douglas and Sharon Hartman of Columbus. Students will explore connections between ecology and economics in preserving Yellowstone’s ecosystem. Participants will have the opportunity to cross country ski, snowmobile and visit Geyser Basin.

Three named to Metro’s dean’s list

COLUMBUS -- More than 2,600 students at Metropolitan Community College qualified for the dean’s list for the Fall 2007-08 quarter.

Among those achieving this honor are Douglas Raymond Briese, Catherine M. Campbell, and Molly M. Lenihan, all of Columbus.

To qualify for the dean’s list, a student must complete a minimum of 12 credit hours in approved coursework (six completed in the current quarter) and maintain a minimum 3.5 grade point average.

NECC students earn degrees

NORFOLK -- Northeast Community College recently announced the names of 112 students who have completed coursework during the fall semester, making them eligible for a diploma or degree.

Area graduates are: Megan Bamesberger of Columbus, practical nursing diploma; Nicole M. Finkral of Humphrey, associate in arts Degree; Travis J. Kumpf of Leigh, associate in applied science in agriculture-agribusiness; Eric A. Neemeyer of Leigh, associate in arts degree; Josef P. Vomacka of Leigh, associate in applied science in diesel technology-truck; Karen Herchenbach of Lindsay, associate in arts degree; Daniel D. Blum Jr. of Schuyler, associate in applied science in diesel technology-truck; and Dianne K. Sindelar of St. Edward, medical coding diploma.

Graduation ceremonies are scheduled for May 10 on the campus in Norfolk.

High Plains honor roll announced

POLK -- High Plains Community High School recently released the names of students earning placement on its honor roll for the second quarter/first semester of the 2007-08 school year.

For students to be placed on the honor roll, they must receive grades no lower than a B (86.5) and have an average of at least 90 percent.

Area students get NWU degrees

LINCOLN -- Seventy-two students were awarded degrees in December from Nebraska Wesleyan University.

The following area students earned their degrees: Chante Bauer of Columbus, bachelor of arts in history; Debra Howser of St. Edward, bachelor of arts in English; Rebecca Thies of Fullerton, bachelor of science in nursing; and Matthew Dempsey of Columbus, master of forensic science.

Area students gain Creighton degrees

OMAHA -- Creighton University recently awarded 294 degrees during winter commencement ceremonies.

Among those receiving degrees were: Brittany K. Smith of Albion, doctor of physical therapy; Ryan M. Kunhart of Columbus, magna cum laude, bachelor of arts; Cindi L. Kumpf of Osceola, doctor of physical therapy.

Garey makes list at Truman State

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- Truman State University recently announced the Fall 2007 Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs’ List.

Laura Kay Garey of Polk, majoring in biology, qualified for this recognition.

Minimum requirements include 3.5-3.99 GPA and completion of 12 semester hours of credit.

WAYNE -- Wayne State College held winter commencement ceremonies on Dec. 14, conferring 193 degrees.

Tiffany Faye Mullenhoff, a summa cum laude graduate and daughter of Richard and Tricia Mullenhoff of Leigh, gave the commencement address. She graduated as valedictorian from Leigh High School and majored in business administration with concentrations in management and human resource management.

FREMONT -- Midland Lutheran College recently named 215 students to the dean’s list (minimum GPA of 3.5 with minimum 12 credit hours) for the fall 2007 term, including 35 members honored on the president’s list (GPA of 4.0 with minimum 12 credit hours).

To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must achieve a grade point average of 3.7 to 4.0 and be registered for full-time course work.

Cheer, dance retreat scheduled

COLUMBUS -- The Columbus Family YMCA Cheer and Dance Retreat will be 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at the YMCA.

Participants will get to perform 2 p.m. Sunday at the Columbus High School Jam.

Girls Scout cookie sale ends Jan. 28

COLUMBUS -- The Prairie Hills Council annual Girls Scout cookie sale will end Jan. 28.

This program is geared toward providing girls with experience in marketing, finance and public speaking, while helping to build self-confidence and esteem.
