Recruiting new for Pelini

Tuesday, Dec 04, 2007 - 08:49:17 am CST

LINCOLN (AP) -- As a recruiter, new Nebraska coach Bo Pelini doesn’t have a good or bad reputation.

He really has no reputation, recruiting analysts say.

As defensive coordinator at Oklahoma and LSU, his charge was figuring out how to use players rather than how to acquire them.

Pelini’s first task at Nebraska will be to keep in the fold players who have verbally committed to the Cornhuskers and then add to the class.

Pelini said Sunday he’s eager to get started recruiting. Analysts say it’s one of the biggest adjustments he’ll have to make as a first-time head coach.

“It’s just a question of want,” said Jamie Newberg, an analyst for Scout.com, who specializes in the Southeast. “Does he want to be that active, be front and center, meet everybody and have that recruit-recruit-recruit type of personality? It’s a huge commitment every day. That’s what it’s going to take.”

Pelini said his recruiting role at LSU was as a closer. He made home visits to prospects, outlined their potential roles at LSU and secured pledges.

“He was not the type of coach who would build a relationship with players over weeks and months,” Newberg said Monday.

Jeremy Crabtree, national recruiting editor for Rivals.com, said Pelini is well-respected by high school coaches. The fact he hasn’t gone on the road to do a lot of recruiting in recent years doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be good at it.

“He’s just been in a position the last few years where he didn’t have to be a monster recruiter,” Crabtree said.

It is not uncommon for offensive and defensive coordinators to play peripheral roles in recruiting.

The key to Pelini’s recruiting success will be the position coaches he hires. Pelini said he planned to quickly assemble his staff.

“There’s a lot that has to be done as far as recruiting goes,” he said Sunday. “It’s going to be a process of everyone getting their collective efforts together and making sure we head this thing in the right direction.”

The role of head coaches in recruiting has changed over the years, Newberg said.

Coaches such as Nebraska’s Tom Osborne and Florida State’s Bobby Bowden were great closers. But closing the deal is a small fraction of the job now, Newberg said, because the process moves much faster.

“Now the head coaches have to be on the road during the May evaluation period with their assistants,” Newberg said. “You’ve got to be seen, you’ve got to be heard, you’ve got to be everywhere. More teams are offering (scholarships) early, doing earlier evaluations, and kids are committing earlier.”

Former coach Bill Callahan came to Nebraska with the reputation as an outstanding recruiter from his days at Wisconsin and Illinois. Callahan relished the chase for players and would go after the top prospects across the nation.

“That was Coach Callahan’s strong suit,” Newberg said. “They put a lot of effort into recruiting. But that’s what it takes no matter where you are.”

Pelini said he would re-establish Nebraska’s in-state recruiting efforts and ramp up the walk-on program. Those are good ideas, Crabtree said.

“Callahan was all over the map,” Crabtree said. “We’re going to see a more concentrated effort with Nebraska, the Midwest, Texas. And they’ll spot recruit some areas. I like that formula. It’s a good way to have success early on.”

Newberg said Pelini has learned from some of the best recruiters in the nation, having worked with Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops and LSU’s Les Miles.

Pelini also has a great resource in Osborne, the interim athletic director and a highly respected recruiter during a 25-year Nebraska coaching career in which he averaged 10 wins a season and won three national championships.

Just as important as recruiting players, Crabtree said, will be recruiting assistant coaches.

“Whoever he surrounds himself with will go a long way to how he gets judged as a recruiter,” Crabtree said.

Perhaps Bill Callahan maybe a good recruiter but, he didn't know how to make the best out of his star players. He ruined their future career. That's why his result at the Nebraska was 5-7. But, the coach Pelini can make the best out of ANY players. He turns stone into jewel. Bo Big Red.

I don't think Pelini or Osborne really CARE what Jeremy Crabtree or Rivals.com thinks. Those recruiting services are worthless IMHO. We never had top ten recruiting classes in the early 90s, when we were recruiting the teams that won national championships 3 out of 4 years. Hopefully this will be the beginning of the end of caring about recruiting and "star ratings"....

I could care less about what anyone at rivals.com or scout.com has to say about anything. They can take their 4-star and 5-star recruiting scams and shove them where the sun don't shine! We don't need stars! We need motivated young men who will play with passion and intensity, each and every day. Men who will play for pride and for the "N" on the helmet, not some potential NFL contract.

Pelini does have a good record at player DEVELOPMENT. that means more than the stars they picked up in HS. It will be great to watch him develop the quality athletes we have now as well as the ones he brings to Lincoln.

I am very excited but will remain apprehensive until about 3 games in when we play Va. Tech. Looks like a great staff, but thats what I thought 4 years ago ?? The recruiting rankings are not real accurate but pretty close and they have only really been ranking since either 95 or 96 so the classes we had in the early 90's that eventually won championships may or may not have been top 10 ??

I've watched numerous four and five star players come to NU and not amount to a hill of beans. They have high ratings, but they seemed to lack desire and the ability to keep fighting. Callahan couldn't inspire a bowel movement. Most, if not all, of his coaches couldn't develop the talent they had. I believe that Coach Pelini will get the most out his players and develop their abilities.

A big Welcome Home to Bo Pelini. Nebraska has lots of talent; you wouldn't know it from a few scores, but I believe these guys have a lot of ability. There's more to talent than a score. Until now, however, they've had no direction, no motivation, and no development. Now, we believe, they have the first two and the third will be along by April. A nice, subsequent blowout win over Mizzou, Kansas, Kansas State, and Colorado would be a great way to start the 2008 season, and could be highly therapeutic.

As Osborne said, it doesn't matter how good recruits look on paper. If they can't show it on the field it doesn't matter if they were 5 star or 2 star recruits. I think this years team proved that. So who cares if he isn't getting 4 and 5 star recruits? As long as Coach Pelini gets players that can play football and win games I think all of us Husker fans will be happy.

I said from the start of CE(calahan era) that "talent status" is way overrated. How many top players out there are head and shoulders above another? Nebraska used to get average to above average atletes who were coachable and had a passion for Nebraska Football who excelled into All-Americans. How many All-Americans did BC produce? It doesn't matter how good your talent is if they don't mesh with the team, or if the coach can't coach consistently. My regards to the staff Solich assembled for that last year with all those former Huskers and the Pelini Brothers, who went 10-3 THE FIRST YEAR TOGETHER. HOW often does THAT HAPPEN?? Yes, it was a sad day when that cohesiveness was dismantled. I believe we are back on track again, now. I predict. 2008 Huskers go 10-3. I also predict another Husker National Championship within the next 5 years. BO BIG RED!!

I'm very excited about Bo's future at Nebraska, I think he was a great choice and will get the Huskers back on track in short order. As much as I like Bo however,I still favored Turner Gill ever so slightly. He has a couple years head coaching experience, he has a stronger Nebraska connection, and being African-American, would probably have had an edge in recruiting black kids. This of course is now water under the bridge with Bo's hiring. Even though he was my 2nd choice, I am on the Bo-bandwagon and am very excited about the huskers future. Look for a BCS bowl next season, and a national championship by 2010.

As we learned over the last 4 years the number of stars you have by your name in high school doesn't mean a whole lot at the next level unless you can be developed and coached up. One thing I appreciated Bo saying to the players is that everyone will start with a new slate. He is going to tear them down, build them back up and knock those "stars" right off their egos. Players will be better for it and appreciate it in the end. I have a lot of confidence in Bo and what he can get accomplished here in a relatively short time. He cares about his players and his players care about him. He forms a bond and connnects on a level that goes beyond the physical. Thank you Tom Osborne and welcome back Bo Pelini.

As a Husker fan from Grand Island who has lived in Hawaii for the last 22 years I've also been a Warriors fan since I've been here. The Warriors have had a stellar offense for years. The difference this year is the improved defense. With Nebraska picking Bo Pelini for the head coach, the defense has got to get better. Good choice Dr. Tom ...GO BIG RED
