COLUMBUS -- Columbus’ annual holiday stroll has been described as “a Norman Rockwell painting -- come to life.”

And, last night’s fifth annual “Downtown Christmas Stroll,” drew an estimated 2,500 area residents and visitors to the kick-off of the Columbus holiday shopping season, said Kara Asmus, coordinator of the Downtown Business Association. The event is hosted by the association.

“It was a fabulous time and an amazing event,” Asmus said. “It was just cold enough outside to remind people that Christmas is right around the corner and just warm enough to make for a great turn-out.

“The people I talked to were having a real blast and the merchants were just thrilled with the number of people who came out.”

Forty-one association member-retailers and service organizations provided entertainment, refreshments and door prizes from 4-9 p.m.

Visitors to the stroll enjoyed special sales, a variety of musical entertainment, wine and cheese tasting, hot cider, chocolate covered strawberries, various demonstrations, a barbershop quartet, gift certificates, and prize drawings.

Several annual features also were on the schedule including free photo opportunities with Santa and Mrs. Claus, trolley rides, a marshmallow cookout, carriage rides, a gingerbread house display, the Festival of Trees, a living nativity play and the annual “Lights of Peace” display.

A great community event put on the DBA, but I'm just a little curious how much $ these 2,500 people actually spent downtown.

"a Norman Rockwell painting -- come to life" Are you kidding me, do these people ever leave town? It would be nice if they could wait til the Christmas season to actually have this.

doesntmatter--Why be negative when people are abviously enjoying themselves. Not everyone is able or wants to shop elsewhere. I do agree with you about the Christmas season. I like to savor each holiday, and it seems like we've skipped Thanksgiving.

It would be nice to be able to wait to enjoy the stroll until after the Black Friday but, that seems to be a problem, so I guess that is what I believe is missing today
great event

as much as I can't wait to move...this is one of the things that I love doing here in Columbus, it's a great way to get the community familiar with downtown again. Keep it up!!!!

Video? What video? I missed the stroll and couldn't wait to see the pics. Maybe everyone else can see it, but all I get is 5 minutes of loading and then nothing because it times out. I guess if you don't have a new computer you're out of luck...and that's sad because it eliminates those of us who don't have state of the art equipment. Let's not forget Telegram, not everyone has computers that are capable of seeing video's - put on some pics so everyone can enjoy this great event....

Nice to see this video. Columbus is my family's hometown. Although, we are back often and Columbus is where we spend our holidays, it is sooo nice to be able to see pictures, videos, etc...of things like this that we do not get back for! You guys have done a great job with this new setup and please know that people like me, away from "home", greatly appreciate being able to stay informed on what's going on!

we made it down ther this year but were just wondering a round there should be a schedule of events. Did not know of the ginger bread display all theother places having events rode the trolly to the tree display at the art gallery then to find out it cost just to look two adults and six kids at 5.00 sorry then had to walk back down town. The video is so grainy and jerky that the people init could be any one.

Thanks for the work in covering the Downtown Christmas Stroll. It seems to be building in popularity. The pictures, video and article were done well. This is event is another good example of the positive things that go on in our community each week. Our family is truly blessed to be living in Columbus Nebraska. There are lots of things we can go on to improve our community, but there are a ton of things happening that make it a great community in which to live.
