Humane Society taking donations
COLUMBUS --Â Volunteers from the Platte Valley Humane Society will be collecting donations from 1:30-4 p.m. today at Wal-Mart.
Items collected will be donated to the new Erna Badstieber Paws & Claws Adoption Center which will be opening to the public Jan. 1.

Halloween Carnival in Monroe today
MONROE -- A Halloween Carnival is scheduled from 1-4 p.m. today at the Monroe City Auditorium.
Admission is free, and carnival tickets can be purchased for 25 cents each or five for $1. Activities include door prizes for children and adults, raffle, free popcorn, cotton candy and drinks. Event is sponsored by the Monroe Youth Organization.

Project Extra Mile meets Thursday
COLUMBUS --Â Project Extra Mile will be meeting at noon Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Family Life Center, 1470 23rd Ave.
Guest speaker will be William Gumm, Columbus Police Dept. Chief of Police discussing the police departmentâs protocol for addressing underage drinking parties and youth access to alcohol. The public is welcome to attend.

CMS presenting âMusic Man Jr.â
COLUMBUS --Â Columbus Middle School will present âThe Music Man Jr.â at 7 p.m. Nov. 8-9 in the Nantkes Performing Arts Center. The musical is a 75-minute production based on the original Music Man Broadway production.
Bill Anderson will be playing he role of the smooth talking Professor Hill, with Mollie Shevlin playing the role of Marian the Librarian. Presale tickets are available in the middle school office and cost $3 for adults and $1 for students.
Tickets will also be sold at the door and cost $4 for adults and $2 for students.
Leigh Community Builders Tuesday
LEIGH -- Neighborworks Executive Director Roger Nadrchal will talk about the program to Community Builders in Leigh on at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Park Place. The public is invited.
Neighborworks is a member of a national nonprofit organization created by Congress to provide financial support, technical assistance, and training for community-based revitalization efforts.
Before the program, visitors are invited to Mikke Malenaâs Holsteinâs Unlimited Dairy at 37245 100th Ave. beginning at 5 p.m.
The tour will continue at 5:45 p.m. at Cooperative Supply and then J&L Automotive.

âStreetcarâ at CCC-C today
COLUMBUS --Â Cast members have been selected for the upcoming Central Community College-Columbus production of Tennessee Williamsâ classic play, âA Streetcar Named Desire.â
The play will be presented at 2 p.m. today in the Fine Arts Center at CCC-Columbus.
Tickets will be available at the door. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for students.
Fall festival at Tarnov Nov. 4
TARNOV -- Historic St. Michaelâs Parish in Tarnov is having a fall festival from 11:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, with Mass beginning at 11 a.m.
The public is welcome to come and enjoy a quilt raffle, a big ticket raffle, a money window and a country store.
The dinner menu will include spaghetti and meatballs, garlic bread, coleslaw, pie and coffee; drinks sold separately. Adult price for the dinner is $6, kids 10 and under $3.
In the event of bad weather, event will take place Sunday, Nov. 11.
Center for Survivors hosting garage sale
COLUMBUS -- The Center for Survivors Garage/Bake Sale will be from 8-noon Nov. 3 at its office, 3103 13th St.
After noon, there will be a bag sale where everything that can fit into a bag will be $2 per bag. All proceeds from this event will support programs and activities of the Center. Donations of items for the sale will be accepted until Nov. 2.
Volunteers from the Center for Survivors run the garage/bake sale.

Martinizing will collect coats
COLUMBUS --Â Martinizing Drycleaning, located on 23rd Avenue, will be collecting new or used winter coats for children, beginning Nov. 1 and continuing through the month.
Coats will be cleaned as necessary at Martinizing Drycleaning at no cost and donated to local charity organizations around Columbus who will give them to children in the community who are in need. Martinizing Drycleaning is open Monday-Friday from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.
Jaycees Military Appreciation Nov. 3
COLUMBUS --Â The Columbus Jaycees are hosting a Military Appreciation Party from 7 p.m.-midnight Saturday, Nov. 3, at the VFW, 2720 23rd St. to say âThanksâ for everything they do for us.

It will accept any donations of old photos from county school buildings, teachers or classes, or it can make copies of photos that people would like to keep.

Program at Smith Dairy Nov. 4
COLUMBUS --Â Dwayne Smith will present a program on the Smith Dairy at 2 p.m. Nov. 4, at the Platte County Historical Society Museum.
The Smith Dairy is a family business that was located in southeast Columbus.
Admission is free to PCHS members and $3 for nonmembers.
Knights steak feed Nov. 10
COLUMBUS -- The three Columbus Knights of Columbus councils have scheduled a 14-16 ounce grilled ribeye steak feed for Nov. 10 at the Scotus Central Catholic cafeteria.
Burgers also will be available for children. Cost is $12.50 for a steak dinner with all the trimmings and $3 per burger. The councils will be serving from 5:30-8:30 p.m., and the public is welcome.
Proceeds from the event will be part of the Knights of Columbusâ pledge to the Scotus Legacy Campaign.
Big Pals Little Pals fundraiser Nov. 4
COLUMBUS --Â Big Pals-Little Pals is hosting its fifth annual Bowl-A-Thon Fundraiser from 1-4 p.m. Nov. 4 at Westbrook Lanes in Columbus.
The organization is looking for individuals to sponsor four-member teams for this important event.

Humane Society Fur Ball Friday
COLUMBUS --Â The Platte Valley Humane Society will be holding its Third Annual Fur Ball Friday, at the Elks Country Club.
Social hour begins at 6:30 p.m. (cash bar) followed by dinner at 7:30. Cost is $35 per person, with funds going towards final construction activities and employee salaries during the start-up period of the new Erna Badstieber Paws & Claws Adoption Center.
The center will soon be housing animals that have previously been placed in foster homes. Since funds from the city will not be received until Q1 2008, money from this fundraiser is vital to the initial costs of the center.
