Rosary rally set for Monroe Saturday

MONROE - A rosary rally is scheduled for Saturday at the Monroe City Park.

The event will be held to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima, Portugal, during which the Blessed Mother appeared to three young children.

Ukrainian group to perform Saturday

COLUMBUS - The Ukrainian Folk Ensemble “Kolos” will perform at Federated Church at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

The group is from the Ukrainian National University of Agriculture. All performers are trained by professionals and each freshman at this 50,000-student university is required to audition for the ensemble upon enrolling. The final ensemble is chosen from a pool of more than three hundred performers.

The performers will be in Nebraska for one week. Proceeds from the concert will go to help pay for their transportation and noon meals. They will sell CDs and possibly T-shirts as well.

The group, which includes dancers and singers, is touring Nebraska as a part of the Galaxy Series of Chadron State College and is stopping in Columbus on their way to Chadron.

Center to host inner journey

SCHUYLER - The St. Benedict Center is hosting an Inner Journey for Women titled “The Gift of Forgiveness”, presented by Mary Ann Warner and Barb Byers.

The program runs from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The program fee is $25, and lunch is available at the center for $8.18 or those attending may bring their own sack lunch.

The St. Benedict Center is located four miles north of Schuyler on Highway 15. Register early by calling the Center at (402) 352-8819.

‘Fruits of Harvest' celebration slated

COLUMBUS - Hope Lutheran Church, 3316 27th St., is having a “Fruits of Harvest” celebration service at 4 p.m. Sunday in the church parking lot.

Those attending are invited to bring their pets, any living creatures and fruits of harvest for an individual blessing done in the tradition of St. Francis of Assisi.

The service will be followed at 5 p.m. by a “Fruits of Harvest Supper.” Those attending are invited to bring their favorite vegetable stew, and it will be combined in large kettles with all others brought. Along with the breads and desserts brought for the fruits of harvest, a dinner will be served. For more information, call 564-7885.

CROP Walk slated at Two Lakes Trail

COLUMBUS - A community CROP Walk is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Two Lakes Trail.

Registration for the walk begins at 1 p.m. at the Lake North shelter. Money raised by the CROP Walk goes to hunger projects worldwide, with 25 percent of the funds staying in Columbus for the food pantry.

Walkers may choose a two, five or seven mile option.

Last year CROP Hunger Walks and events raised over $15 million to support hunger-fighting work in the community and around the world.

Ellis Island play Sunday at center

SCHUYLER - The St. Benedict Center is presenting a one-person theatre performance titled “Voices from Ellis Island” performed by Pippa White.

The performance begins at 7 p.m. Sunday and follows seven immigrants from different parts of Europe as they cross the Atlantic Ocean and confront unexpected challenges. City teachers among conference speakers

OMAHA - Several city teachers were among the presenters at the Archdiocesan Fall Conference Oct. 5 at Skutt High School in Omaha.

Teachers from throughout the Omaha Archdiocese attended the day-long event including the teachers from Columbus Catholic Schools.

Among the presenters were Angie Roh, JoAnn Brandt, Carolyn Lippert and Amy Sokol from St. Anthony Elementary School; Jeff Ohnoutka from Scotus Central Catholic; and Kathy Zadina from St. Bonaventure Preschool.

The day was organized by the Catholic Schools Office personnel headed by the Rev. James Gilg.

Parker to speak at Trinity Lutheran

COLUMBUS - Trinity Lutheran Church is sponsoring a presentation by Christian speaker Dr. Micah Parker on “Sexuality and Profanity-How Our Culture Tricks us into Dangerous Behaviors.”

The free presentation is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. Oct. 19 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2200 25th St. and is open to the public.

Dr. Parker's presentation is directed toward teenagers (middle school and older) and parents. He is a former basketball coach who is an experienced, exciting and humorous speaker.

‘Boo at the Farm' set for Oct. 27

TARNOV - St. Michael's Church is hosting “Boo at the Farm” from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 27.

Activities include pedal tractor pull, hay jump, petting zoo, storytime, face painting and children's play area. Tickets may be purchased for a bounce house, kiddie games and hayrack rides. A lunchstand will have Sloppy Joes, hot dogs and homemade goodies. From 1-2 p.m. will be an appearance by US92 Hummer.

Admission is $4, with all proceeds going to St. Michael's Church.

St. Anthony bazaar scheduled Oct. 28

COLUMBUS - St. Anthony Church is hosting it's annual bazaar and dinner at 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 28 at Platte County Agricultural Park.

Activities include music throughout the day, 5 p.m. auction, raffle, bingo, cake walk, fish pond and much more. Cost for the dinner is $7.50 for adults, $3.50 for children 5-10 years, and under 4 are free. Dinner includes roast beef, turkey and dressing, and a variety of desserts.
