COLUMBUS - Central Community College's match with the Dana College junior varsity wasn't pretty, but Central found a way to win.
The Raiders won a 25-30, 30-25, 30-27, 16-30, 15-11 match over the Vikings Tuesday at the Raider Field House.
One of the reasons why Central struggled was 14 service errors and poor passing. As a result, setter Amanda Nelson struggled to find a rhythm to get good sets to attackers, especially in game four, which Dana won 30-16. But Central found another gear and came away with a 15-11 win in the match. Nelson did finish with 37 set assists.
“We had a lot of passing errors,” Central coach Mary Young said. “It wasn't a good night passing for us. We also struggled with service errors. We played sluggishly on defense. We were just a step slow. But give Dana credit. They played like they had nothing to lose.”
Alison Smith led the Raiders with 12 kills, while Leah Anderson and Lisa Oberhauser finished with nine kills. Oberhauser added seven blocks, while Lakeview graduate Sara Westmeyer recorded five blocks, including one at match point.
Young said Central was a much different volleyball team during this match than the ones she saw this past weekend at the North Platte Community College tournament where it finished 5-0. But she was happy the Raiders won despite playing a poor match.
“We have a young team,” Young said. “But the important thing is that we found a way, and that's important. I saw things that were some positives, like we pulled together in game five after we got killed in game four.”
The Raiders will play at Iowa Lakes Tournament, which starts Friday.
