Three drawing classes offered

COLUMBUS - The Columbus Area Arts Council (CAAC) is offering a three-evening drawing class Wednesdays, Sept. 12, 19 and 26 in the Columbus Art Gallery located on the lower level of the Columbus Public Library, 2504 14th St.

The class is taught by Phyllis Blaser of Duncan and will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The fee for the class is $25 plus supplies. Current CAAC donors receive a 10 percent discount on the class fee.

The Columbus Area Arts Council office is located in the Columbus Art Gallery in the lower level of the Columbus Public Library. Gallery and Gift Shop hours are noon-5 p.m. Monday through Thursday; noon-4:30 p.m. Friday and from 1:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Church looking for musicians

COLUMBUS - A new mission church, 1C, in Columbus is seeking musicians for a Christian contemporary/rock band.

Guitarists, vocalists, drummers and keyboardists are needed. Worship is geared toward 20-30-somethings and will be held Sunday mornings beginning Jan. 13.

This mission church of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod has been started by Peace Lutheran Church of Columbus and the LCMS Nebraska District.

CHS open house Wednesday

COLUMBUS - Columbus High School will host an open house from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Parents will have the opportunity to become familiar with their student's schedule and meet staff.

Leigh's annual car show Saturday

LEIGH - The 4th annual Leigh car show and shine will be held Saturday, on Main Street in Leigh. Registration will be from 12-2 p.m., and there is a $10 entry fee. Various trophies will be awarded at the non-judge show, and door prizes will be given throughout the day.

The car show will be held from 2-5 p.m. with a burnout contest at 6 p.m. A beer garden and various activities will be held throughout the day.

Recital Sunday by Glur-Zoucha

COLUMBUS - Michael Glur-Zoucha will present a classical piano and saxophone recital at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Nantkes Performing Arts Center at Columbus HIgh School. The Columbus High senior has been playing the piano since he was 4 years old.

The event is free, and the public is invited to attend.

Big Pals-Little Pals marking 35 years

COLUMBUS - Big Pals-Little Pals is proud to be celebrating their 35th anniversary this year.

Big Pals-Little Pals is a mentoring program that recruits men and women volunteers and matches them with boys and girls from single-parent families in an effort to provide these youngsters with an adult friend, role model and mentor. Ideally, this friendship will promote self-confidence, positive relationships with others and productive citizenship into adulthood. Big Pals-Little Pals serves children from single-parent homes age 6 through graduation from high school. They have 50 children matched with a Big Pal, with another 20 youth waiting for a Big Pal. Many of the children have been waiting over two years for someone to become their Big Pal.

Big Pals-Little Pals will be hosting a reception in honor of all past and present Big and Little Pals after their Bowl-A-Thon fundraiser at Westbrook Lanes Nov. 4. It would also like to find out more about their past Big and Little Pals since they left the program. If you or someone in your family has been a Big or Little Pal, Big Pals-Little Pals would appreciate your giving them their current address.

Applications sought for Miss Nebraska

COLUMBUS - The Nebraska Junior Miss Scholarship Program is taking applications for their 2008 scholarship competition.

Applicants must be high school senior girls.

The program seeks to reward female students who excel in academics, athletics and the performing arts with cash scholarships. The state winner advances to the national level to compete for additional cash scholarships.

Jodi Miller, a 1986 Columbus graduate, is a past state scholarship winner.

Drinking, driving crackdown

COLUMBUS - The Columbus Police Department will be one of 10,000 law enforcement agencies across the nation participating in the “You Drink & Drive, You Lose Crackdown.” The campaign will take place through Sept. 3.

The end of summer and the upcoming Labor Day holiday means more travelers on the roadway. Unfortunately, a larger number of motorists will make the decision to drink and drive.

“Our goal will be to reduce the number of alcohol related accidents and make travel safer,” said Officer Terry Heesacker of the Columbus Police Department. “The key to deterring impaired driving is highly visible enforcement.”

The Columbus Police Department has been awarded a grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety. The grant will be used to pay for the overtime of adding additional officers to target impaired drivers.

Regional job fair set for Sept. 12

COLUMBUS - Employers from the area are invited to participate in the Fall 2007 Columbus Regional Job Fair to be from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Central Community College-Columbus gymnasium.

During the job fair, employers are encouraged to hand out applications, accept resumes and share information about their company with those that attend the fair. The job fair will be advertised throughout the region and will be open to the public. There is a $125 fee for businesses to participate.

The deadline to reserve a booth for the job fair is Aug. 30. To obtain a registration form call Bonnie McPhillips with Nebraska Workforce Development at 564-7160.
