Doug Randolph has replaced Paul Andrews as crew chief of the No.43 Dodge driven by Bobby Labonte for Petty Enterprises, effective immediately.
Randolph, 41, has been in the sport for more than 20 years and most recently served as crew chief for Regan Smith in the NASCAR Busch Series.
"Looking at other options, I felt working with everyone at Petty Enterprises was right for me," Randolph said. "Bobby is a championship driver and the organization is very determined to get back to Victory Lane."
Labonte is 20th in the Nextel Cup standings.
"We haven't had the finishes that we've wanted," he said. "This sport is always changing and there are always new challenges. You get a guy like Doug to come in, and maybe he can add something that you never thought of. Maybe he can point us in a different direction we never thought about.
"It's something we did to take that next step. I think Doug has goals from now to the end of the year. You just keep evolving and going until you win races and go after a championship. That is what everyone is in it for."
Andrews, who won the Cup championship with Alan Kulwicki in 1992, has 12 victories and 30 poles in his career as a crew chief in NASCAR's top series. He also has worked with drivers Geoffrey Bodine, Jeremy Mayfield and Steve Park.
Tim Andrews, Paul's son, will remain part of the Petty team's driver development program. He is scheduled to drive in an Automobile Racing Club of America event at Talladega in October.

Kenny Wallace has stepped down as driver of the No. 78 Chevrolet for Furniture Row Racing. A news release posted on the team's Web site said Wallace will remain with the team as a consultant and will be called upon to run races as needed, but that he also will be available to drive for another team.
An AT&T spokesman said Tuesday the company will continue to pursue its right to use its logos on the No. 31 Chevrolet driven by Jeff Burton despite Monday's unanimous decision by a three-judge appeals court panel overturning an injunction giving it that right. AT&T can appeal that decision as late as Friday, but spokesman Mark Siegel said no decision has been made about what will be done for this weekend's race at Michigan.
Carfax will sponsor Jason Keller in CJM Racing's No. 11 for the rest of the Busch season.
