Crackers to Caviar fundraiser set COLUMBUS - Crackers to Caviar will be hosting a fundraiser Monday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Columbus High School 2008 trip to Germany. Wireless Internet at Columbus library COLUMBUS - Responding to requests from visitors - particularly traveling salespeople - a wireless Internet system has been installed in the Columbus Public Library. Additionally, electrical outlets have been installed in two study carrels for the convenience of patrons with laptop computers. Robert Trautwein, library director, said the library has been receiving a half-dozen inquiries a week from patrons who have their own lap-top computers and need a wireless source. The library will be providing its wireless service on a hourly basis. Patrons must secure a password at the reference desk. The wireless system was installed by Community Internet. Ron Brown at Prayer Breakfast COLUMBUS - Ron Brown, Nebraska State Director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) is the keynote speaker for this year's Columbus Days Prayer Breakfast. The early morning Prayer Breakfast is scheduled for Aug. 3. Brown spent 17 years on the coaching staff at the University of Nebraska before joining FCA in 2004. The event is sponsored by Highland Park Evangelical Free Church and Mission Nebraska. Serving for the Friday morning Columbus Days Prayer Breakfast will start at 6:30 a.m. with the program starting at 7 a.m. The Columbus Days Worship Band will be performing worship music as part of the breakfast program. There is no cost at attend the breakfast and it is open to the public. The event is held at Highland Park Evangelical Free Church. The church is located at 4115 38th St. Duck Race tickets for purchase COLUMBUS - Duck Race tickets can be purchased at prize sponsor businesses will have tickets through Wednesday. The Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce office and the United Way office will have tickets for sale until noon Friday. Their offices are open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. The United Way will be set up at Mike's Auto Sales during Wiener Wednesdays Aug. 1 from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Duck Race tickets also will be available from 3-6 p.m. Thursday at Wal-Mart and from 6:30-8:30 p.m. during the Community Band Concert. Museum open during Col. Days COLUMBUS - The Platte County Museum will be open to the public for Columbus Days. Tours of the museum are available from 1-4 p.m. Friday-Saturday. Lemonade will be available on the west side of the building from 1-4 p.m Aug. 5. A showing the DVD “Roots That Run Deep,” a history of agriculture in shaping the culture and the economy of the Columbus area, also will be available. Admission to the museum is $3 for nonmembers. The DVD showing and lemonade are offered at no charge. YMCA preschool signup under way COLUMBUS - The YMCA is currently accepting preschool sign-ups. There is a limited amount of openings in the 4- and 5-year-old morning and afternoon sessions. For more information, call 564-9477. Animal Control has cats available COLUMBUS - The Columbus Animal Control Department currently has a large quantity of cats and kittens available for adoption at the Columbus Animal Shelter. Cats and kittens range from eight weeks to adults in a variety of colors and personalities. These kittens have had their first set of shots and have been dewormed. Cow decorating contest for kids COLUMBUS - There will be a kids cow decorating contest for Columbus Days. Kids from 2-10 years old are encouraged to enter the contest by picking up an entry form and a cow from the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce, Penny's Floral or the Columbus Public Library. There is no entry fee to enter the contest. Take completed cows to the Chamber of Commerce with the entry form. The cows will be on display in the windows of the Village Centre Mall. Judges will be selecting three winners in each age group. Age groups are 2-4 years, 5-7 years, and 8-10 years. The deadline for judging is Wednesday. CHS 10-year reunion planned COLUMBUS - The Columbus High School class of 1997 is holding a 10-year reunion Friday-Saturday. Cost is $10 per person if paid in advance or $15 per person at the door Saturday. On Friday, an informal social is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Signatures Sports Bar & Grill, 510 E 23rd St. On Friday, a tour of CHS and CMS is planned at 10 a.m., meeting at the west doors of CHS, and at 7 p.m. a reunion is set for Elks Country Club, 5113 63rd St., with hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar. A current schedule of events also is available. Call 564-2769 with any questions. YMCA carnival for kids Saturday COLUMBUS - The Kiddie Carnival will be at the YMCA from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday. The carnival is for children ages 6-and-under. Used computer collection Aug. 6-7 COLUMBUS - The PrairieLand Resource Conservation and Development Council will host a used computer collection Aug. 6-7 at the Madison County Fairgrounds. The council serves Boone, Colfax, Madison, Nance, Platte and Stanton counties. The public is encouraged to bring in any obsolete computer components, which will be weighed and sorted. Items accepted at the collection include printers, monitors, keyboards, CPU's, scanners or any other computer components. Individuals will be allowed to drop off 60 pounds for free. A fee of 30 cents will be charged for each pound over the 60 pounds. Businesses and organizations: 500 pounds, free; 30 cents per pound over; and schools; 800 pounds free, 30 cents per pound over. Knights raising flags at games COLUMBUS - Fourth degree members of the Knights of Columbus are planning to present and raise the American flag as an honor guard at Scotus Central Catholic home football games during the 2007 season. All fourth degree Knights who are members of one of the three city councils - St. Bonaventure Council 938, St. Anthony Council 9264 or St. Isidore Council 12086 - along with members of the John F. Kennedy Assembly 0605 who are parents of Scotus students, are welcome to participate. Scotus' four home football games in 2007 are Sept. 14 (Boone Central), Sept. 27 (Madison), Oct. 5 (Wisner-Pilger) and Oct. 18 (Twin River). Regional job fair set for Sept. 12 COLUMBUS - Employers from the area are invited to participate in the Fall 2007 Columbus Regional Job Fair to be from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Central Community College-Columbus gymnasium. During the job fair, employers are encouraged to hand out applications, accept resumes and share information about their company with those that attend the fair. The job fair will be advertised throughout the region and will be open to the public. There is a $125 fee for businesses to participate. The deadline to reserve a booth for the job fair is Aug. 30.
