COLUMBUS - The rural Genoa farm operated by John and Darren Nelson will be the field stop site for the final day of the 2007 Soybean Management Field Days set for Aug. 14 through Aug. 17.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. at each day's field stop location. One hour presentations will rotate from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Each day's event will be held rain or shine.

Admission is free and a complimentary lunch will be provided. Certified Crop Advisor credits are available at the completion of the event. The presentations will be held in tents and field tours will be offered. Participants are invited to bring unknown crop problems for complimentary identification.

The field days will be held at the following locations: Aug. 14, Hastings/Doniphan, Bob Johnson Farm; Aug. 15, Weeping Water, Ron & David Baxter Farm; Aug. 16, Osmond Schmit Farm (Dan & John Schmit); Aug. 17, Genoa/St. Edward John & Darren Nelson Farm.

“All of the presenters are excellent and Steve Johnson who will present at the field day in Genoa is always very well received,” said Platte County Extension Ag Educator Allan Vyhnalek. “The field stop at the John and Darren Nelson farm is a great opportunity for area producers to participate.”

Vyhnalek said there will be demonstrations set up at each field stop, and the plots themselves are used to illustrate the concepts that are being taught.

“It's a very effective way to show the producers what the concept looks like in the field and very educational,” Vyhnalek said.

The “Soybean Row Spacing, Plant Population, Planting Date and Water Management” presentation will be presented by UNL Extension Engineer Paul Jasa and UNL Professor of Agronomy and Horticulture Jim Specht.

Participants will learn how to increase available soil water by reducing runoff and evaporation, observe row spacing and learn population and planting date influences on plant development, understand the yield components of number of plants, seeds per plant, and seed size and learn about water needs for the various plant growth and seed development stages.

Loren Giesler, UNL Extension plant pathologist, will present “Manage New and Emerging Disease, Insect and Weed Problems.”

Another presentation will cover learning the effectiveness of timely weed control, how to manage soybean cyst nematode and sudden death syndrome and updated information about soybean aphids and soybean rust.

UNL Extension Soils Specialist Charles Wortmann and Ray Ward, co-owner and president of Ward Laboratories, will present the “Nutrient Management Issues for Soybean Production” workshop.

This workshop will include information about soybean root growth and nutrient uptake, starter fertilizer use for high-residual no-till production, effective nitrogen application at early seed fill for high yield soybeans and improving recovery of applied phosphorus

Farm and ag business management specialist from Iowa State University Extension, Steve Johnson and UNL Extension Educator Terry Hejny will present the workshop “Making Crop Yield and Price Decisions.”

In this workshop participants will discuss factors involved in estimating soybean yields, considering storage and marketing decisions, implementing the 2007 Commodity Farm Program and managing crop revenue risks.

The four day event is sponsored by the Nebraska Soybean board, in partnership with UNL Extension.
