Bunkers places 3rd at FBLA conference
CHICAGO - Kyle Bunkers recently placed third in the business procedures events at the Future Business Leaders of America National Leadership Conference in Chicago June 28-July 2.
More than 7,000 FBLA members from across the nation competed in business related events. Competitors must qualify at the state level in order to compete nationally.
Also attending the conference was Jordan Went, past Lakeview FBLA President and Mountain Plains Region Programs Committee member. Went presented two workshops on membership recruitment at the conference. Over 300 FBLA delegates attended the workshops.
The Lakeview FBLA chapter also was recognized for having the second largest chapter in the Mountain Plains Region with 201 members.
Four on SECC dean's list
MILFORD - Southeast Community College-Milford recently released its spring quarter dean's list. Area students honored include Dan Kerkman, Fletcher Schmid, Eric Vetick, all of Columbus, and Jordan Preister of Genoa.
Berlin on dean's list at Hillsdale
COLUMBUS - Kelsey Berlin, a freshman biology major at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich., was recently named to the dean's list. She is the daughter of Randy and Harriet Berlin of Columbus.
Area students on med center list
OMAHA - The University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing recently released its dean's list for spring 2007. The college has nursing programs based in Omaha, Lincoln, Kearney and Scottsbluff. Area students honored include Erin Von Bonn of Albion, Jennifer Kaup of Schuyler, Ashley Novotny, Amanda Ott, Amanda Udey, all of Columbus, Andrea Strain of Genoa, and Stacy Nelson of Monroe.
Freshman program slated for Central
COLUMBUS - A summer bridge program will be offered Aug. 14-16 at Central Community College-Columbus.
The program is designed to help freshman make a smooth transition into college and start them on their way to achieving their educational goals. During the program, participants will live on campus and attend skill building, leadership skills and orientation sessions.
Students interested in the program must sign up by Aug. 1. The cost is $65, which includes lodging, meals, and one college credit hour. Went selected state homecoming queen
CRESTON - Jordan Went, daughter of Ryan and Jan Went of Creston, was recently selected the 27th annual Nebraska's Homecoming Queen. She will represent the state of Nebraska and is the Lakeview High School Homecoming Queen. She will received a cash scholarship and an all-expense paid trip to compete for the title of American's Homecoming Queen at Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, Calif., Aug. 1.
Lindquist gets scholarship
OSCEOLA - Daniel Lindquist, a 2007 graduate of Columbus High School, was recently awarded an MG James Ursano Scholarship of $3,200 for the 2007-08 academic year. The scholarship was awarded for academic excellence, leadership and achievement. Lindquist plans to further his education at Brigham Young University-Idaho at Rexburg, Idaho. He is the son of Ron and Linda Lindquist of Osceola.
City students get HC scholarships
HASTINGS - Hastings College recently awarded scholarships to attend Hastings College for the 2007-08 academic year. Area students awarded include Jess Thompson and Lizzie Powers, both of Columbus. Thompson received a football scholarship and is the son of Frank and Sherry Thompson. Powers received a music scholarship and is the daughter of Phil and Mary Powers.
Central students place at SkillsUSA
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Nine Central Community College students recently competed in the National SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Conference in June in Kansas City, Mo.
SkillsUSA is a national organization for students in trade, industrial, technical and health occupations education. Its annual competitions are designed to recognize the achievements of career and technical education students and to encourage them to strive for excellence and pride in their chosen occupations.
The CCC students were among 4,800 high school and postsecondary students from across the U.S. who earned the right to compete at the national level by placing first in their respective state competitions. CCC results were:
CCC-Columbus: Clarks; Derek Veburg, 10th place in technical drafting. Columbus; James Swartz, ninth place in computer numerical control turning, and Kevin Swartz, fifth place in technical computer applications. Aaron Brant and Bryan Korus placed ninth in the mechatronics team event. Holstein; Audrey Churchill, Holstein, seventh place in photography. Petersburg; Veronica Olnes, 12th place in architectural drafting.
