Bullets go 1-2 at Seward Tourney SEWARD - The Columbus Pinnacle Bank Bullets went 1-2 at the Seward tournament this weekend. The Bullets started the tournament with a 10-6 loss to the Beatrice Stars Saturday in pool play. Columbus trailed 6-0 going into the bottom of the fourth innings, but put up five runs. on four hits and two Beatrice errors. The Stars countered with four runs in the fifth inning to pull away for the win. Melissa Pekny led the Bullets' attack by going 2-for-2. Tammie Kozak, Whitney Cave and Jamie Bohaboj each added a hit. Jaisa Gutierrez dominated Columbus' second game of pool play as she threw a three-hit shutout for a 3-0 win against the Dakota Wild. Gutierrez didn't record a strikeout, but relied on solid defense from the Bullets. Mollie Jones finished 2-for-2, while Heather Colby reached base in all three plate appearances. On Sunday, the Bullets suffered a 3-1 loss to the Lincoln Sizzle Blue in the single-elimination tournament. Each team finished with just four hits, while Columbus was done in by two unearned runs. The Bullets loaded the bases in the second inning, and the first two batters reached in the fourth, but the Sizzle escaped each threat by striking out the side. Cave took the loss for the Bullets as she struck out four and allowed two walks. Cave, Pekny, Brittany Sock and Steph Gade collected Columbus' hits. Colby scored the Bullets' lone run on Cave's RBI single. Bohaboj also provided some excitement as she nearly took out first-base coach Boyd Jones on a line drive. However, Jones dove backward to avoid the hit. Samuels, Whites suffer loss in Iowa AMES, Iowa - The Bison-Nebraska White team suffered its first loss of the All-Iowa Adidas Tournament Sunday. The Whites fell 53-51 on a three-point play with 3.7 seconds remaining. Shavontae Samuels of St. Edward scored 10 points in the loss. In the first game of the tournament, B-N White topped KC JC Hoops 69-48 as Samuels scored 12 points. Also, Samuels added 14 points in a 74-39 win against ECI North Dakota in pool play. Big Red Academy set for June 18 COLUMBUS - The Columbus Baseball Association is sponsoring the Nebraska Baseball Academy's return to Columbus this summer. It will offer a youth camp June 18 at Pawnee Park Field. The camp will run from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and is open to 7 year olds to 12th graders. Registration is due by June 13 costs $60, but participants can get $5 off by signing up at www.bigredacademy.com.
