COLUMBUS - The condition of the often-criticized Third Avenue south of the railroad tracks will be discussed by the City Council during its Monday night meeting.
Some people drive out of their way to avoid the road south of the railroad tracks to South Fifth Street because of its numerous pot-holes.
The subject has been closely tied to the viaduct issue and Mayor Mike Moser has stated he would focus on work with landowners along Third Avenue to get the road paved.
City Administrator Joseph Mangiamelli said the item was placed on the agenda at the request of Councilman Chuck Whitney who could not be reached for comment.
“This is more for information purposes right now as to why something can't be immediately done to improve the roadway,” Mangiamelli said. “This will provide an opportunity for the city engineer to explain why the city doesn't just go in and use taxpayer dollars to make the improvement.”
Because the issue is partially intertwined with the status of a Third Avenue viaduct, some of the discussion may be a little premature, he said. General discussion will be held among the council and more detail and public input will be received in the near future “as we get farther along with the viaduct (process).”
“A viaduct on Third Avenue, if constructed, will have related to it a substantial amount of paving on Third Avenue,” Mangiamelli said. Although the road “south of Eighth Street will remain in unimproved condition unless we can come to an agreement with adjacent landowners to make necessary improvements.”
