COLUMBUS - Faced with the possibility of losing a dual against West Point, the Lakeview wrestling team got a big boost from Brandon Silvey.

Despite giving up two stalling points in the final 15 seconds, Lakeview's 140-pound sophomore earned a 9-8 decision over the Cadets' Aaron Brodahl to help the Vikings rally and win 33-26.

Lakeview coach Mick Bubak said Silvey's match was key.

“I'll tell you what, (Brodahl) was a good wrestler,” Bubak said. “He probably isn't as good as his two brothers, but he's a decent wrestler. That was a big win for not only us, but for Brandon as well.”

After a scoreless first period, Silvey went up 4-0 on a reversal and put Brodahl in a cradle for back points. A few seconds later, Brodahl got out of the cradle for a reversal. Silvey again scored a reversal and put Brodahl on his back, but couldn't get the pin as he scored two more back points.

With Brodahl starting the final period in the down position, the West Point grappler scored two points on a reversal. He cut Silvey loose in hopes of scoring a takedown, but he was unsuccessful. Brodahl put Lakeview ahead 27-26, and the Vikings won the final two matches to secure the victory.

Jeff Skiles and Victor Bohrer both won their matches 6-3 at 145 and 152 pounds, respectively. Skiles defeated Geo Montenego, while Bohrer topped Dylan Goreham to wrap up the dual.

Clayton Hoadley started the duel with a 12-5 win over Jordan Paulsen. The 171-pounder held a 7-5 lead but took Paulsen down and got him in cradle as the match wound down.

Zach Hoadley and Braxton Staack recorded back-to-back first-period pins as Lakeview built a 15-0 lead. Hoadley stuck Brandon Heiman in 29 seconds, and Staack pinned Jon Erickson in 54 seconds.

“Zach came out and wrestled well,” Bubak said. “He put the kid on his back and held him there. Those two pins were big because we needed those.”

The Cadets won the 215-pound match as Spencer Mitchell defeated Isiah Tamez 10-1.

With the next three matches ending in forfeits, West Point was back to within 21-16 and ran off three straight wins. The Cadets' Adam Brodahl defeated Stewart Bohrer 8-5 at 119 pounds, Alex Harrington won a major decision over Derek Blaser at 11-3 at 125 pounds, and Andrew Brodahl defeated Travis Bauer 6-2 at 130 pounds.

Leading 26-21, the Cadets seemed to have all the momentum. But Lakeview regained it as 135-pounds as Merit Rodehorst won a 7-1 decision over Will Schultz before Silvey's victory.

West Point coach Ted Glover said he was not happy with his wrestlers' performance.

“I didn't feel like our guys wrestled up to their potential that we are capable of wrestling,” Glover said. “We needed to wrestle harder in the third period. I thought we didn't do that, and that was disappointing because we didn't leave it all out on the mat tonight.”

Bubak said the win was special because the Vikings haven't beaten West Point in his three years at Lakeview.

“It's been real close with some matches the last few times.” Bubak said. “Anytime you can come away with a win is always nice. I liked what I saw out of the kids.”
