Cooper showing improvement

BROWNVILLE - The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has announced results of its mid-cycle performance review at Nebraska Public Power District's Cooper Nuclear Station, and the news is good for NPPD.

The NRC staff finished its performance review in August and concluded that due to improved plant performance, the NRC plans no additional inspections at the plant other than what is normally required.

Additionally, the NRC acknowledged improvement in the station's problem identification and resolution processes. Based on this recent assessment, the NRC determined this issue, addressed in Cooper Station's corrective action performance improvement plan, can be closed. The NRC said it specifically noted improvements in the effectiveness of corrective action to address plant issues, the equipment-trending program, and the use of operational experience to identify problems at the plant.

“Bringing this issue to closure is important to Cooper Nuclear Station and all of NPPD,” said NPPD President and CEO Ron Asche of Columbus. “Nuclear power generation is important to Nebraska's economy, and I applaud the efforts of management and staff for these improvements. With the continued support of the Board of Directors and plant employees, NPPD will continue our efforts to improve performance and keep the station safely operating to serve Nebraskans for years to come.”

As a result of certain performance deficiencies in Cooper Nuclear Station's emergency preparedness program in mid-2001, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and NPPD developed a plan during 2002 to address a total of six areas in which Cooper needed to improve.

The six areas were emergency preparedness, human performance, material condition and equipment reliability, plant modifications and configuration control, corrective action program, utilization of industry operating experience and self-assessments, and implementation of engineering programs.
