COLUMBUS - Just because school will be out for the summer doesn't mean reading has to stop.

The Columbus Public Library will begin its summer reading program next month.

"If they don't continue reading in the summer, what they learned (in school) will be diminished," children's librarian Brad Hruska said.

The program, which runs from June 9-Aug. 1, attracted about 800 children last year. This year's program is set to the theme of 'Doggone Fun at the Library.'

Each week will feature a different topic based on dogs, such as training, service and rescue dogs and dog care.

A different activity will be held each day. Movies will be shown at 1:30 p.m. on Mondays, and special activities and presentations from organizations like the Colfax K-9 Unit, the Humane Society and local veterinarians are scheduled at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays. Story time will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Thursdays. Fridays are family days when children and their parents are encouraged to visit the library together.

Each child in the program is encouraged to read one book a day or a week. Prizes such as gift certificates and Beanie Babies will be given out.

Registration for the program is free and begins the week of June 2 at the library located at 2504 14th St. Hruska said if a child is not able to be registered during that week they can sign up anytime during the summer.

A special activity will be held prior to the reading program. Amazing Arthur will be at the library at 1:30 p.m. May 29. Amazing Arthur will perform magic tricks, juggle and make balloon creations. The program is free.

David City will also have a summer reading program at the Hruska Memorial Public Library. Beginning June 10, on each Tuesday and Thursday, children in preschool through sixth grade can take part in the program called Laugh It Up at Your Library. Registration should be done by June 3.
