Area boxers to fight Saturday in Fremont

By The Telegram Staff

FREMONT - A rematch, a state boxing legend and an undercard loaded with Telegram-area fighters highlight a professional boxing card scheduled for Saturday in Fremont.

The six-match card is slated for the Fremont City Auditorium and is set to begin at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $25 for ringside seats, and general admission is $15 for advance and $20 at the door.

Ten percent of the proceeds from the card will be donated to the Fremont Area United Way, with another 10 percent going to the Fremont Boxing Club.

The six fights will be refereed by Ron Stander. Nicknamed "The Bluffs Butcher," Stander is best known for his 1972 fight for the world heavyweight championship in Omaha against then-champ Joe Frazier.

Frazier defeated Stander by technical knockout in the fifth round after numerous Frazier headbutts opened cuts on Stander's face.

Stander quit fighting in 1983 with a 60-20 record.

One of the bouts Stander will officiate will be the main event of the card, a rematch between Drew Carlton of Kearney and Ken Luther of Grand Island. Their first fight ended in a draw.

Several area fighters are scheduled to compete on the undercard. Two of the bouts will have area boxers going against each other.

Heavyweights Josh Dittmer of Genoa and Ben Zarek of Monroe are scheduled to tangle, and junior lightweights Jorge Morales of Columbus is slated to take on Josh Fritton of Silver Creek.

Junior middleweight Jesse Robinson of Columbus is scheduled to battle Sean Wilson of Omaha.

In a cruiserweight bout, Allen Thingstad of Shelby is to face Fremont's Ryan Bahrs.

In another heavyweight fight, Patrick Smith of Lincoln is matched against Tom Romine of North Bend.

The card, promoted by Nebraska Boxing, is subject to change.

Tickets can be purchased at Wunderlich's in Columbus or at Denny's Liquor and Wine Center, Sleep Inn, Lou's Sporting Goods and Monte's Drive-In Liquors, all of Fremont.
